[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]A powerful kick to the stomach. He felt his back arch up.

A stronger uppercut, right under his jaw. The mastiff felt his bottom canines dig into his nostrils.

Another hit, this time on the eye. Instantly, the left side of the world darkened.

Finally, his back leg was dislocated, twisted backwards, and the ball put back in its socket. Tears rolled down Joseph's mutilated face and his body shook with his cries.

The taste of his master's blood was mixed with his own salty tears. This, this... attack was for playfully nipping master's toe. Master did not like to be touched.

    Not at all.

Joseph howled and stumbled to the door. Master opened it, and to make sure Jo didn't come back, literally kicked him out. Now his lower back hurt more, if that was possible.

The bull mastiff reeled as fast as he could to... nowhere. He wanted to get away, get away from it all, away from abusive Master.

Away from the Master's partner, who was loving and sweet. Jo could hear the female screaming at her husband.

Everything after that was a blur. It was like he was drunk; all he remembered was blood and tears and one foot in front of the other.

Finally, oh finally, he found something. It was a large Master building. A musky yet sweet smell drifted out of it. Along with the smell of other animals, and even some dogs.

He felt hope for a second, and then utter fear. What if they beat him like Master did?

Joseph took a deep breath. "Come on, Jo," his gravelly voice mumbled. "You're a mastiff."

The dog swallowed and limped up to the door. He lifted a paw up to knock, but hesitated. Jo narrowed his eyes and knocked.

Joseph sat down and waited for a response. Mean while, he looked at himself in a piece of discarded mirror.

He almost screamed. One side of his body had bones poking through the skin, the other was dark purple under his buzzcut cinnamon fur. Jo's bottom jaw was hugging his muzzle, somewhat sideways. His right back leg was destroyed. His left eye was bright white and bloodshot. His ear was hanging off at an awkward angle. Jo's back was curved in an ungraceful arch.

    Scratch that, he did scream.

Joseph slumped on the ground, yelping through tears and pain. He heaved and sobbed. Soon, he cried no tears. He was all out. Snot had formed a puddle under him.

    He wished he were dead.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]It hurt, it hurt, it hurt so, so much. His sobs faded to whimpering cries. He felt lightheaded; because of all of the tears he had lost a good amount of oxygen. Dizziness consumed him and he felt... warm and sleepy while being hugged by a cloud.

When he opened his eyes he found a beautiful border collie before him. Kia, apparently. He should say thanks.

    "Tu-tu..." he mumbled, woozy. "Tunks."

Joseph felt himself being carried now. Then this wolf thing. And then a liger. What was with these weird animals?

He had had his eye on Kia the whole time before he was set down on a spare couch. The springs pushed against his now black left side and he yelped.

Jo shook and reached the lick the bone, but the second he turned, the bruise sent him a wave of pain. He immediately flung himself back, only to cause more pain.

He wanted to scream, so he did.

"AAAH!" Jo screamed. He let it all out all his anger and his sadness and his exhaustion and his hunger.

Jo needed a nap, the cranky toddler.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]When his leg was back into place, he let out a horrendous yell. That hurt.

Then he felt her delicate paws slide over his leg and wrap the scarf. His sides heaved. Joseph needed to stay strong.

Then Jo thought Kia should know his name. He let out a mumble: "Jo... Sif."

    [fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]Joseph took a deep breath.

He walked out the library doors, right to the still-bloody spot where he cried before they found him. Right next to that spot was the same piece of mirror glass, still cloudy and embedded in the hard-packed dirt.

Jo scratched at it, eventually loosening it from the ground. He picked it up and sat.

He wanted to clean, but didn't know how. Instead the bullmastiff just spit on it and rubbed it with his pawpad. There, he could actually see himself now.

It was worse than last time. More detail, much more intricate and graphic. Joseph sucked in a breath. He couldn't cry, not in the open like last time.

    No tears would come anyway.

He set it down and just... stared. Stared at what he had become, at his beloved Master did to him. Joseph snarled and kicked it away. It hit the brick wall and shattered.

Joseph felt like tearing him apart. Next time he saw a human, he swore, it would not escape alive.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]Joseph nodded painfully and flicked his tongue out. Now he couldn't it move it any further, nor could he take it back. He also felt too sick and tired to move, so he just lay there with his tongue sticking out. Jo let out a small laugh, where only his sides raised once. He couldn't even lick his wounds now.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]Bullmastiffs were originally bred for guarding estates, which he was pretty good at before he was... attacked. This dog breed is in a category called molossers, a type of solidly built and large dog. The name derives from Molossia, an area of ancient Epirus, where the large shepherd dog was known as a Molossus.

A small smile was on his top jaw as he thought of that. He had recently spent his time recovering by reading a book, and he proffered Epirus literature and history. Of course, to read those, he would have to learn Greek and Albanian. He was working on it.

He hadn't gone hunting in a while, or at all, so he decided to try it.

Joseph limped out into the forest surrounding the library and perked his ears at the sound of another dog. Odd enough, she sounded familiar.

He followed the sound as quietly as a molosser could, which was reasonably loud. Instead of some insane chihuahua, he found his love, Kia.

Jo cocked his head, barking softly, "Hi, Kia." He had also been practicing his talking. Jo had gotten pretty well.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]The voice surprised him, but he didn't show it. After the incident, he wasn't feeling surprised about anything anymore.

Jo turned to face Kia, instantly turning his agitated grimace into a warm smile. "I'm fine." he barked softly. "Just reluctantly nostalgic is all."

The canine padded up to her and sat parallel to Kia. He was a good foot taller, and much more brawny.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]He had watched his masters view a movie before. The only difference was the snacks and the movie: Master wanted cookies and popcorn, the other Master wanted BLTs and sushi. They settled on fried chicken.

His Masters had also watched the Blair Witch Project. Joseph had hidden in the kitchen for that.

Since it was a kids' movie, he decided to join.

Joseph stumbled through the library before he found the spot. He settled near the front, to the left. There, he couldn't scare any children.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]He tried to bite his lip by instinct, but instead, he looked like an idiot. Instantly Jo corrected himself.

Time to begin the story of... Not a lifetime.

"Well, I nipped Master's toe and he doesn't like playful nips. So he beat me up. As you can see, he mutilated me." Not very compelling, but good enough. Joseph's eyes darted down and a thin film of tears were on his eyes.

"I had to... Leave my home. I left the mean one." Under his tears were images of a beautiful woman, sweet and kind and caring. "And left his mate behind. She was amazing."

There you go, story's over. He looked up now and smiled at Kia. "I know wild dogs aren't supposed to like humans whatsoever, but... I think you would've liked her."

That was Joseph for you: talk to him once, and he'll treat you like a lifelong friend.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]"Steng! ET STENGS!" he yelled. Soon, a calming numbness had lain itself over his wounds. Soon, he felt sleepy. His eyes drifted closed as Joseph fell into a fitful sleep.

A small, grateful smile played upon his jaw. He crossed his eyes, looking directly at her small paw. Joseph looked her in the eyes.

Looking at her right there, in those coffee-brown eyes, he felt like fireworks just went off in his stomach. Joseph's tail thumped happily.

Jo nodded at her comment. "Mine were both." Smooth, Jo. You already told her that.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]Joseph had experienced what it was like to be abused. He got here a few days ago, suffering a destroyed face, a mutilated back and torso, and a dislocated, backwards leg.

Jo padded up behind Zeke, sucking in a breath. He looked horrible. "Oh my," he grumbled.

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]Joseph had an idea for a Sweetheart Dance. He hoped they could invite all allies and maybe some neutrals.

The plan was to ask your sweetheart to the dance and just have a good time. It was also a masquerade party, much to Joseph's content. He would probably ask Kia.

He only hoped she said yes.

Jo sat in the middle of the lounge, calling out, "Uh... Zeke! I have an..." Joseph swallowed. "Idea!"

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]He tried a smile to Kia, Halfpaw, and Pearl. Joseph then turned to Zeke, barking, "I was thinking we could do a sweetheart dance. You would ask someone you like to go to the dance with you, and, uh, there'll be food." Joseph's wide brown eye flicked over to Kia and back. "And a masquerade contest," he mumbled. "For... Those who don't want to scare anyone."

[fancypost bgcolor=transparent; bordercolor=transparent; font-size: 8pt; width: 300px; text-align: justify;]He had to stop thinking about them. Joseph fixed his good eye in Kia's and nodded. Then he just... sat there.

Finally Jo nodded again, smiling, "Yeah. I saw a wing place on my way here." he shifted his paws. He had no idea how to talk to girls. "How about there?"
